Common Certification Myths: What’s Actually Stopping You?

Talk to enough people who have thought about earning a tech certification and never followed through, and you start hearing the same reasons on repeat. Most of them sound sensible. Most of them are also wrong, or at least far less true than they used to be.

Here are four of the most common myths, and what the reality looks like.

Myth 1: You need a tech background before you can start

Plenty of people assume certification training is only for those who already work in IT or studied computer science. In reality, entry-level certifications exist precisely because employers need a way to evaluate candidates who are new to the field. Splunk® offers certifications at multiple levels, starting with fundamentals designed for beginners. If you can commit to learning, you can start from zero. Many people do.

Myth 2: Certification courses are always prohibitively expensive

This is the myth with the most staying power, and for understandable reasons. Bootcamps and instructor-led prep programs regularly charge anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars per course. If that were the only option, the myth would simply be the truth.

It isn’t the only option. Ableversity is a nonprofit built specifically to make Splunk certification training affordable. That structure is the point, not a promotion. Our AbleU platform offers self-paced courses aligned to official exam blueprints, practice exams, and a learner community, all at a fraction of what traditional programs charge. There is even a free tier if you want to look around before spending anything. Cost is a real consideration, but it no longer has to be the thing that decides your career.

Myth 3: You have to quit your job or study full time

Traditional programs often run on fixed schedules, which is where this myth comes from. But self-paced training changes the math entirely. You can study before an early shift, after the kids are asleep, or in whatever pockets of time your week actually allows. Progress depends on consistency, not on clearing your calendar. People finish certifications while working full time, raising families, and managing everything else life demands.

Myth 4: It’s too late for you to change direction

There is no expiration date on learning a new skill. Career changers come to Splunk training from logistics, retail, healthcare, construction, and the military, often after a decade or more in their previous field. That prior experience is an asset. Someone who has managed inventory, handled difficult customers, or kept operations running under pressure already understands the kind of problem solving that data work requires. The certification adds the technical vocabulary. Your background supplies the rest.

The pattern behind the myths

Notice what these myths have in common: each one describes a barrier that made sense years ago and has since been dismantled. Training got cheaper. Schedules got flexible. Entry points multiplied. The obstacles most people cite are memories of an older system, not descriptions of the current one.

If a certification has been sitting on your someday list, it may be worth asking whether the thing stopping you still exists.
